Department of Books: I’ve just read The Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanazaki. An elegiac portrayal of a society in transition. Recommended. No, I haven’t seen the movie.

    I’ve been meaning to read The Makioka Sisters for years. I’ve seen the movie several times. The kimono in it are beautiful.

    Ohhh the makioka sisters! I recently saw a Japanese drama based on it but translated to the early 90 after the bubble burst. Interesting how the characters dealt with the same issues, history repeating itself. Tanizaki is one of my faves always visit his grave in Kyoto. The beads look like they could make a young girl happy. Neki
